Fault finding

Electrical fault finding and repairs

We’ll discuss the problem with you over the phone and, where possible, help avoid an unnecessary callout and cost. If an on-site visit is needed, we’ll arrange attendance subject to availability and explain any callout and travel costs before proceeding.

Based in Tain, serving Ross-shire, Inverness and the wider Highlands.

Before you pay for a visit

Ring us first — we might sort it over the phone.

We’ll discuss the problem with you over the phone and, where possible, help avoid an unnecessary callout and cost. If an on-site visit is needed, we’ll arrange attendance subject to availability and explain any callout and travel costs before proceeding.

We aim to attend as promptly as possible. Appointments and urgent callouts are subject to availability, and same-day attendance cannot be guaranteed. We’ll discuss the problem, the available appointment options and any callout or travel charges before arranging a visit.

All prices are given on the phone before we set off — no meter running, no surprises when we arrive. Ring Kelvin on 07954 350 931.

The usual suspects

Faults we sort every week.

  • RCD keeps tripping — nuisance tripping, whole-house drops, or tripping under load. Usually a damp appliance, a failed heating element, or a circuit with too much cumulative leakage sitting behind one RCD.
  • One socket or ring circuit dead — often a loose neutral at a spur or a broken back-box. Sometimes rodent damage in the loft.
  • Half the lights out — usually one lighting circuit MCB, but sometimes a shared neutral fault between two circuits.
  • Hot switches or sockets — always investigated. Never just replaced without finding out why.
  • Flickering lights — dimmer/LED compatibility, loose connections at the ceiling rose, or supply-side voltage dip.
  • Immersion not heating — element, thermostat, timer, or the off-peak circuit not being switched on by the meter. We check all four.
  • Shower keeps tripping — usually a failed element, sometimes a shared RCD picking up leakage from another circuit.
  • Extension work that's stopped — often a connection that was working under test but has failed under real load a few months later.

Discussing and investigating the fault

We’ll discuss the problem with you over the phone and, where possible, help avoid an unnecessary callout and cost. If an on-site visit is needed, we’ll arrange attendance subject to availability and explain any callout and travel costs before proceeding.

What we charge for fault finding

Fault-finding prices depend on how long it takes to find the fault, which depends on the fault. A dead socket that turns out to be a loose neutral behind the faceplate is a quick job. A phantom RCD trip that only happens when the heating and the immersion both fire at 6am takes longer to catch.

Ring us with a description of what's happening (or WhatsApp a photo of the board and any error indicators) and we'll give you a fixed price for a fault-finding visit before we set off. If we can talk you through the fix on the phone, there's no charge — we're not going to bill you for two minutes on the phone.

If we find the fault and it needs a bigger fix (new circuit, board change, cable in a wall), we quote the fix separately and you decide whether to go ahead. No pressure, no upsell.

Advice and quotations

We’ll explain what we find, advise on the work required and provide a quotation where needed.

Common questions

Can you diagnose it over the phone?

Do you charge for the phone call?

No. If we can talk you through it, that's not a paid service. We're not on a meter.

Is this an emergency?

Anything smoking, burnt, hot, or making a noise it shouldn't — treat it as an emergency, turn off at the main switch if you can safely reach it, and ring 07954 350931. For non-urgent faults (a socket that stopped working, an RCD you're not sure about) it's not an emergency and you don't pay an out-of-hours rate as long as we're coming out in normal working hours.

Will you find the fault first time?

Some faults may require further investigation or a return visit. We’ll explain the findings and discuss any additional work and costs before proceeding.

Not sure if it's an emergency?

Ring us. We'll tell you straight.

Daytime fault, tripping breaker, dead circuit — the fastest way to find out what you're dealing with is a two-minute phone call. For urgent enquiries, call the same number. Attendance is subject to availability.
